CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team rounded out its spring break trip in Tennessee with a doubleheader sweep over Bryan College on Thursday, March 17.
The Cats surged past the Lady Lions in the opener as they registered a 9-0 run-rule in six innings. In the nightcap, RSU posted six runs in the fifth in route to an 8-1 victory.
GAME ONE
In the opener, the Hillcats took an early 3-0 advantage in the top of the first. Senior Brittany White led off with a single and moved to third with a double by sophomore Amanda Edwards. Sarah Harvey sent both runners across home plate with a double down the left field line. With two outs, Katrina Loy belted a double to bring Harvey home.
RSU struck again in the fifth and increased the lead to 6-0. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Shelby Brogdon grounded out which allowed Linsey Curtis to score. Ashlie Fauchier scored on a wild pitch and White advanced to third. Katie Bointy grounded out and White scored.
The Cats ended the game early with a trio of runs in the top of the sixth. Harvey scored on a wild throw by the Lady Lions short stop, Taylor Yates. Loy scored on an error by the first baseman, Rachel Kirby. With two outs, White recorded her third hit of the game and drove in Cutis to give the Cats a 9-0 advantage.
Ashley Wailand (10-6-1) registered the win in the circle for the Hillcats. The junior hurler pitched six scoreless innings and allowed just four hits with two strikeouts.
GAME TWO
It took a little more time for the Cats to get their bats going in the night cap but they made up for lost time in the fifth inning as they plated six runs.
Taran Threet and Dina Ortiz opened the fifth inning with back-to-back singles. Brogdon singled off the wall in left field, allowing Threet and Ashlee Dillman who was pinch-running for Ortiz to score. Fauchier followed with a walk, putting runners on first and second. Edwards hit a two RBI double to send both base runners home. Senior Logan Zamora cleared the bases with a two-run blast over the left field fence. It was the Sun City, Calif. native's eight homer of the year.
Zamora struck again in the seventh with a two-run homer to push the Cats lead to 8-0. The Lady Lions posted one run in the bottom half of the inning but the Cats were able to earn an 8-1 victory.
Amanda Edwards (12-1) recorded the win in the circle for the Cats. The sophomore tossed the complete game allowing three hits and one run while fanning three hitters.
Rogers State (22-7, 2-0) returns to Sooner Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, March 22 at Hillcat Complex against Oklahoma Baptist. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. and the games will be broadcast live on RSU Radio 91.3FM or on www.rsuhillcats.com.
