Hillcat Softball Halted by Lady Bison

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Roger State softball team suffered its first doubleheader sweep of the season from Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday evening at Hillcat Complex.

The Bison took an early lead and relied on solid pitching performances in the late innings in both contests to record the sweep. OBU posted a 7-4 victory in the opener and notched a 3-1 win in the night cap.

GAME ONE

OBU dented the scoreboard in the top of the first with a two-out single by Alison Tunnell that plated Theresa Garcia.

The Cats knotted up the score in the bottom of the second with a first-pitch leadoff home run by Senior Logan Zamora. The Sun City, Calif. native belted the ball over the centerfield fence. It was her 10th homer of the season.

OBU regained the lead with a two-out solo shot over the centerfield fence by Sonya Beach in the top of the fifth.

The Lady Bison added to their lead in the top of the sixth with a trio of runs off four hits.

Senior Sarah Harvey sparked a Hillcat rally in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff home run over the left field fence. Amanda Edwards and Katrina Loy hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third. Taran Threet hit a sacrifice fly to plate Edwards and Brogdon singled to score Loy to cut the lead to 5-4.

Candice Holden pushed the OBU lead to 7-4 with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh. OBU pitcher Noelle McDowell allowed just one hit in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.  

Edwards (12-2) recorded the loss in the circle for the Cats as she pitched six and one third innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits with one strikeout. Junior Ashley Wailand started the game and faced four hitters. She allowed one run on two hits and two walks. 

GAME TWO

The Hillcats left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first as they were unable to score a runs. OBU designated player Casey Beach belted a home run over the centerfield fence to put the Bison on top 1-0 in the top of the second. OBU added a pair of runs in the third to increase its lead to 3-0.

Threet put the Hillcats on the board in the fifth with a first-pitch solo shot over the centerfield fence. However, the Bison held the Cats scoreless the rest of the way to complete the sweep.

Edwards (12-3) registered her second consecutive loss in the circle after giving up three runs, two earned, on nine hits. Cassidi Henderson picked up the win with a complete game performance for the Bison. Threet went 3-for-4 with the lone RBI in the contest for the Hillcats.

Rogers State (22-9, 2-2) looks to bounce back with a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon against Oklahoma Christian in Edmond. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
