Oklahoma Christian Sweeps Softball Hillcats

EDMOND, Okla. - Rogers State dropped a pair of softball games to Oklahoma Christian Tuesday afternoon in Edmond, Okla.

The Lady Eagles held off a late rally by the Hillcats to win the opener, 3-2. OC then exploded for 15 runs on 16 hits to win the nightcap, 15-7.

GAME ONE

It was a case of too little, too late for RSU in the opener. Tanya Koch belted a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning, but the Hillcats came up one run short in a 3-2 loss.

The Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead when Tiffany Sherman singled and scored on a fielder's choice in second inning. OC added a pair of crucial insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. After three straight singles, Amy Urbanovsky and Casey Brady delivered back-to-back sacrifice flies to increase the lead to 3-0.

Marie Gaudet led off the top of the seventh with a walk and scored on Koch's fourth home run of the season. The sophomore catcher led RSU with three hits and two RBI in the contest.

Jenny Johnson was tagged with the loss for the Hillcats in a complete-game performance. Leigh Leonard (8-3) earned the win after giving up two runs on seven hits over seven innings of work.

GAME TWO

Both teams went on the offensive in the nightcap as Oklahoma Christian outslugged the Hillcats, 15-7.

RSU grabbed a two-run lead in the top of the third inning as Lillian Nevarez and Sara Walkup tallied run-scoring hits in the inning. However, the Lady Eagles countered with four runs in the bottom of the third and added three more in the fourth to make it 9-4.

A two-run double by Gaudet and an RBI single by Koch cut the lead to two, but the Cats couldn't keep pace with the OC offense.  The Eagles scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth and reach the run-rule margin with two more runs in the sixth. The Hillcats were charged with six errors in the contest, leading to six unearned runs.

Johnson (25-19) suffered the loss while Linzi Farris (7-6) picked up the win for OC. Johnson also led RSU with three hits while Christin Dobbs and Cara Miller had three apiece for the Lady Eagles.

Rogers State (27-21, 9-13) fell to sixth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings and will take the rest of the week off before playing a make-up date at Mid-America Christian Monday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
