Top Ranked Rogers State Pummels Pioneers, 79-58

PLAINVIEW, Texas - Not even this week's blast of winter storms and frigid temperatures could cool down red hot Rogers State as the Hillcats took their juggernaut offense on the road Thursday night to Plainview, Texas.

No. 1 RSU shot 60 percent from the field and put away Wayland Baptist early to record a 79-58 victory at the Hutcherson Center. Eric Young led four Cats in double figures with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

Jason Griffin gave the Pioneers the early lead by hitting three treys in the first five minutes of the game. However, RSU responded with an 11-0 run and never looked back. Back-to-back 3s by Deveric Taylor and Matt Kellogg and a dunk by Sylvester Spicer stretched the lead to 34-19 with 3:40 to play in the first half. Roderick Rodgers scored 10 first half points to push RSU to a 40-23 advantage at the break.

The Hillcats opened the second half on an 8-0 run capped by a soaring Spicer dunk that opened the flood gates. RSU led by as many as 32 points in the second half before emptying its bench. All 13 players in uniform saw game action for head coach Lloyd Williams while no player played more than 24 minutes. Spicer finished with 14 points while Rodgers and Aldric Reynolds each added 10. Desmond Ward recorded the first points of his career with a pair of free throws inside the two minute mark.

Bobby Watkins led WBU with 17 points. Griffin, Tyrone Crawford and Rene Farias scored nine points apiece for the Pioneers. WBU shot 58 percent from the floor in the second half but was still outscored by the Hillcats, 39-35.

Rogers State (18-1, 12-1) won its fifth straight game and maintained its grasp on first place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings. The Hillcats will have a day off before facing Lubbock Christian Saturday afternoon at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. and the game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
