Vasallo Ties Single Game Goals Record In Rout Of Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – No. 13 Rogers State (4-2-2, 1-1 GAC/MIAA) rolled to a dominating 9-1 win over Newman (1-4-2, 0-2 GAC/MIAA) on Saturday.

With nine goals, this performance is tied for the second most goals in a game in school history, matching the 9-0 win over Southwestern College in 2009, and the most ever against an NCAA opponent. Marcos Vasallo tied the school record for most goals scored in a single game finding the back of the net four times, matching Desmond Fitzgerald's effort in that same game against Southwestern.

Four other Hillcats scored in the match with Ryan Harvatin scoring twice and Erik Hjertsson, Hugo Martin and Victor Heroin all adding a goal apiece. Declan Viljoen (4-2) earned the win and made five saves while allowing one goal in 68 minutes played.

Newman came out of the gates immediately on the offensive attack. Just 85 seconds into the game, the Jets broke the seal with a goal to take an early 1-0 lead. However, the momentum began to change as the two sides settled in. In the 29th minute, Vasallo equalized with his first goal of the day off a pass from Hugo Martin. He struck again with his second goal less than a minute later this time off a pass from Alex Fletcher. In the 39th minute, Vasallo added his third goal off the foot of Santiago Serrano, heading into the break with a 3-1 lead.

In the second half, RSU piled on the offensive pressure. Vasallo found the back of the net for the fourth and final time in the 51st minute with another assist from Fletcher. In the 55th minute, Erik Hjertsson got in on the scoring action with an assist from Luke Morgan to go up 5-1. Ryan Harvatin scored in the 59th minute with an assist from Matthew Sweetman. Less than a minute later, Martin scored with an assist from Ulisses Costiera. In the 84th minute, Harvatin struck again this time with an assist from Owen Alack. Victor Heroin capped off the scoring in the 89th minute with an assist from Serrano to seal the 9-1 victory.

The Hillcats are back in action on Thursday, Sept. 28 as they travel down the road to Tahlequah, Okla. for a battle against rival No. 22 Northeastern State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
