RSU Takes Down Missouri Southern On Gonzalez’s Penalty Kick Goal

JOPLIN, Mo. – Rogers State women's soccer (5-5-2, 3-3 MIAA) came away with a 2-1 win over Missouri Southern (0-10-2, 0-4-1 MIAA) on Sunday.

Both Sophia Wickenden and Vanessa Gonzalez scored their first goals of the season in the win. Tiffany Brittan (4-5) earned the win with five saves while allowing one goal.

The Hillcats wasted no time going on the attack to start the game as they earned a corner kick in the 9th minute. With Amaris Jasso playing the ball into the box, Wickenden headed in the first goal of the game, giving RSU an early 1-0 lead. However, just three minutes later in the 12th minute MSSU equalized with a goal to level the score at 1-1. From there, things settled in for the remainder of the period with the Lions outshooting the Hillcats 7-3 with three shots on target to two.

The second half continued the defensive theme of the end of the first period. Again, MSSU outshot RSU 5-3 in the final 45 minutes with two shots on goal compared to one. In the 69th minute, the Hillcats earned their first penalty kick of the season. Gonzalez lined up for the kick and fired it into the lower left corner of the goal to give the Hillcats the 2-1 victory.

RSU returns home to start a four-game homestand on Friday, Oct. 13 as they play host to Nebraska-Kearney. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
