EDMOND, Okla. – No. 3-seed Rogers State softball (47-9) claimed their first MIAA Tournament Championship in thrilling fashion as they walked off No. 1-seed Washburn (45-13) in a 4-2 win on Sunday.
Like yesterday, this game featured the two best pitchers in the league going head-to-head, which meant runs would be hard to come by. In fact, neither starter allowed a run in the first two innings.
The Hillcats broke the seal as they took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Kimberli Presnell got things going with a leadoff solo homer to left center.
The Ichabods responded in the bottom half with a run of their own to tie it 1-1. The run scored on a sacrifice fly to right. They then took the lead 2-1 in the top of the sixth with the run coming on a RBI single up the middle.
Makayla Bowman tied the game up at 2-2 and forced extra innings as she launched a solo blast to left to leadoff the bottom of the seventh.
Washburn tried to get some offense going in the eight and ninth innings, putting three runners on across the two frames but were unable to push them across.
Facing two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Presnell got on base with an infield single to second base. After getting the count to 3-1, Chelsea Spain played the hero as she uncorked on a game-winning two-run moonshot to left center.
Andrea Morales (30-3) earned her 30th win of the season pitching all 9.0 innings with 11 strikeouts. Jaycee Ginter (30-5) took the loss.
For their performances throughout the tournament, Morales, Bowman and Nicole Price were all named to the All-Tournament Team with Morales earning the Most Outstanding Player Award.
With the win, the Hillcats earned the MIAA's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Regionals, and will learned their postseason destination during the NCAA Selection Show tomorrow at 9 a.m. The selection show will be broadcast on NCAA.com
