CLAREMORE, Okla. – No. 1-seed Rogers State softball (48-9) took down No. 8-seed Winona State (40-16) in a 1-0 pitcher's duel in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional on Thursday.
Going into to this game, both teams knew that runs would be hard to come by as two of the nation's top pitchers faced off against each other. In fact, both starters struck out the side in the first inning.
The Hillcats got the game's only run in the second inning as they took a 1-0 lead. Facing a 1-2 count with one out, Bridgett Morales proved to be the difference maker as she launched a ball over the left field wall to put RSU on top with a solo home run.
In the remaining five innings, the two teams combined for two hits and managed to strand five runners between them.
Andrea Morales (31-3) earned the complete game shutout win only allowing one hit and striking out 14 Warriors, including her 1,000th career strikeout. She is now one of only two active Division II pitchers with 1,000 or more career punch outs, joining Minnesota State's MacKenzie Ward in the exclusive club.
WSU's Liz Pautz (26-6) was outstanding in the loss as she held the Hillcats to just two hits with 14 strikeouts over her six innings.
With the win, RSU stays in the winner's bracket and will face off against No. 4-seed Minnesota State tomorrow for a spot in the Central Regional Championship Game. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
