DENVER – No. 5 seed Rogers State softball (54-10) will face off against No. 8 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills (42-21) in the winner's bracket game of the NCAA Division II Softball Championship at The Assembly Athletic Complex at 12 p.m. CT on Friday, May 27.
The Hillcats notched their first ever win in the softball championship with a 7-2 victory over No. 4 seed Southern Indiana in the opening game of the tournament on Thursday. With the win, RSU's last five victories have come against teams that have won a national championship within the last decade.
RSU was led offensively by Abbey Rogers who launched the decisive three-run home run the third inning to put the Hillcats up 4-0 at the time. On defense, Andrea Morales led the way with her 35th win of the season earning the complete game with 10 strikeouts and only allowing two walks.
The Toros won their first round matchup by upsetting No. 1 UT Tyler in a 5-1 win in the first game of the day. Like the Hillcats, this was CSUDH's first ever win in the softball championship after also making their debut in the tournament.
The Toros took advantage of three errors by the Patriots and used five doubles and two-run blast from Miya Lopez to get their runs. Ashley Wies (20-8) earned the win in the circle working 5.2 innings out of the bullpen with three strikeouts and allowing UTT's only run.
