WICHITA, Kan. – No. 2 Rogers State softball (36-4, 15-1 MIAA) split a doubleheader against Newman (15-23, 6-10 MIAA) on Friday.
GAME ONE - RSU 3, NU 0
After both starting pitchers worked a scoreless opening frame, the Hillcats got on the board in the second inning as Elexis Watson launched a solo home run to center.
RSU added a run in the fifth to go up 2-0. Callie Yellin came in on a bases loaded walk. They added a final run in the seventh to seal the 3-0 win as Nicole Price scored on a RBI single to right center from Abbey Rogers.
Andrea Morales (21-1) earned the complete game shutout as she struck out five batters and only allowed two hits. Madison Dewitt (3-12) took the loss.
GAME TWO - NU 3, Newman 2 8 Innings
In the second game of the day, Newman got on the board first with an early 1-0 in the first inning. The run scored on a RBI double to left.
The Jets added a run in the bottom of the third to push out to a 2-0 lead. The run came in on a RBI single to center.
In the top of the fifth, the Hillcats tied the game 2-2 and eventually forced extra innings. Makayla Bowman uncorked a two run blast over the left field wall that scored Rebecca Bell.
In the bottom of the eighth, Newman got two singles to start the frame. A hit by pitch loaded the bases with no outs. The Jets walked off the game with a walk for the 3-2 win.
Megan Walz (6-3) earned the win. M'Kayla Hillman (12-3) took the loss.
The Hillcats will look to rebound on Saturday, April 16 as they travel to Edmond, Okla. to face off against No. 10 Central Oklahoma. First pitch is set for 12 p.m
