RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – No. 3 Rogers State softball (27-3) split a mid-week, non-conference doubleheader with Arkansas Tech (21-14) on Tuesday.
GAME ONE - RSU 4, ATU 1
After both starters worked a scoreless frame to open the game, the Hillcats got on the board first with a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Bridgett Morales got things started as she drove in Lana Gass with a RBI single to center. Chelsea Spain later plated Nicole Gonzalez with a RBI single to right center.
Both pitchers worked the the next four innings without giving up a run.
RSU tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh to go up 4-0. Makayla Bowman launched a two-run homer over the left field wall scoring Jaylan Gibson.
The Golden Suns got a run back in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 4-1. The run came in on a solo homer to left.
Andrea Morales (16-1) earned the complete game win and was unhittable through six innings with 12 strikeouts and only one walk. Bailey Buffington (7-5) took the loss after scattering nine hits and giving up four runs.
GAME TWO - ATU 2, RSU 1 (8 Innings)
The second game was a true pitcher's duel. After ATU took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI single up the middle, both pitchers refused to give up a hit for the the next three innings.
The Hillcats finally broke through to tie things at 1-1 in the top of the fifth. Chelsea Spain drove in Callie Yellin with a RBI double to center.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Golden Suns scored the game winning run on an error by the shortstop.
Kaila Cartwright (2-0) earned the win going the final 3.1 innings. M'Kayla Hillman (8-2) took the loss, but went 7.2 innings only allowing three hits with four strikeouts.
RSU will be back in action on Friday, April 1 as they return home for a conference doubleheader against Lincoln. First pitch is schedule for 3 p.m.
