RSU Hangs On To Knock Off Washburn

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State women's basketball (10-13, 6-11 MIAA) survived a late surge to knock off Washburn (10-11, 8-7 MIAA) in a 55-54 upset win on Monday. The Hillcats have now won three straight and six of their last eight games.

Three Hillcats finished in double digits. Vanessa Gajdosova led the team with her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds as well as dishing out a team-high four assists. Jordan Lewis and Julie Luna both contributed 10 points apiece with Lewis adding five rebounds, two steals and a block and Luna adding two rebounds, two assists and a steal.

In total, RSU only trailed for 30 seconds in the game. After taking the lead at 3-2 at the start of the game, they went on to outscore the Ichabods 35-18 in the first half. A large part of this success was due to the Hillcats scoring 14 points off of 11 Washburn turnovers in the first 20 minutes and holding them to just six points in the second quarter.

However, this game was a true tale of two halves as the Ichabods came out hot in the third quarter. After starting the half on a 6-2 run, they closed out the period on a 16-4 run to trim a 16-point deficit to 44-38 going into the final 10 minutes. In the fourth quarter, the Hillcats saving grace down the stretch was their ability to shoot 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the period, as the Ichabods had a shot to win down 55-54 with 13 seconds left.

RSU will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 10 as they begin a two-game road trip in Hays, Kan. against No. 6 Fort Hays State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
