CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State Women's Soccer picked up a 2-0 victory over Missouri Southern State at Soldier Field Friday night with a pair of second half goals to give the Hillcats their first-ever victory in MIAA play.
Maggie Brown and
Hailey Gunn scored their first goals of the season to propel the Hillcats to victory.
Brown scored her fourth career goal for the Hillcats in the 62
nd minute to put the Hillcats in front.
Hannah Mushisky passed the ball ahead to
Anita Gaspar, who then found Brown. The junior worked an opening in the left side of the penalty area and fired a shot inside the left post to beat Riley Laver.
Gunn scored her first career collegiate goal just eight minutes later to double the Hillcats lead. The freshman picked up a loose ball and then found a small opening to drive her shot from about 24 yards out just inside the right post.
The Hillcats didn't face another shot from the visitors over the final 20 minutes, as Rogers State recorded their second-straight shutout at home and fourth of the season as
ReVella Fisher made eight saves overall.
The first conference game at home for Rogers State saw both teams battle and have several scoring opportunities over the first 45 minutes. The Hillcats held 55 percent of the possession in the first half and outshot the Lions 10-8.
Mushisky,
Laurelle Theodore and
Bria Salazar all had quality scoring opportunities stopped in the first half and
Audrey Maxwell and Gaspar also had shots that sailed just over the crossbar.
At the other end of the pitch, Fisher had to come up with several big saves as well to see out a scoreless first half. Fisher made six first-half saves, including a couple from close range.
Over the full 90 minutes, the Hillcats held 58 percent of the possession and outshot the Lions 28-12.
Rogers State will remain at home for another MIAA contest, welcoming in No. 7 Central Missouri for a Sunday afternoon contest. The Hillcats will kickoff with the Jennies at 2 p.m. at Soldier Field.
