Hillcats Split Doubleheader with Hilltoppers

AUSTIN, Texas – Rogers State softball split Sunday's doubleheader as the Hillcats claimed game two, 5-0, after dropping the first game to St. Edward's, 6-2, at Diane Daniels Field.
 
Game One
Harli Wheeler led off the first game with a single and scored on a two-out single to right field by Taylor Santistevan to put RSU up 1-0. The Hilltoppers evened the score in the home half of the first inning as Sami Williams singled up the middle scoring Alex Mayfield.
 
A walk by Kayla Patterson to lead off the second inning, the Hillcat right fielder would move to second on a stolen base with two outs and score on a throwing error to give RSU a 2-1 lead.
 
The Hilltoppers would take the lead in the third inning as the Hillcats committed three errors in the home half of the inning and SEU posted two runs for a 3-2 advantage.
 
SEU added insurance as Kayla Appleby doubled to center field to score Breah Whitten in the fifth inning. The Hilloppers added two more runs in the sixth inning to claim a 6-2 victory in RSU's Heartland Conference opener.
 
Megan Rosewell (14-4) suffered the loss allowing four earned runs while giving up nine hits to the Hilltoppers. Lauren Slatten earned the victory as the Hilltopper senior gave up three hits and one earned run while fanning nine Hillcats and issuing four walks.
 
Game Two
RSU claimed the second game of the twin bill behind a complete game, one-hit performance by Rosewell in the pitching circle and a 2-for-4 performance at the plate by freshman De'Leigh Emarthle.
 
Emarthle led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field building a 1-0 lead for the Hillcats. The Muskogee, Okla. native would lead off the top of the seventh inning with a solo shot to center field for her first two home run contest as a Hillcat.
 
RSU struck again in the fifth inning with a two-out, bases loaded walk of Santistevan to score Wheeler. The Hilltoppers would walk Ali Turner scoring Morgen Blanchard and build the Cats lead to 3-0. A Patterson RBI single to shortstop scored Arika Araujo to stretch the RSU lead to 4-0.
 
The Hillcats totaled nine hits in game two as Blanchard went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Patterson batted 2-for-3 with a RBI and a walk.
 
Rosewell earned the victory for her 15th win of the season while issuing three walks. Ashlee Rex (2-6) received the loss going five innings while allowing four runs on seven hits while fanning four and walking four.
