AUSTIN, Texas – Rogers State dropped game three of the weekend series with St. Edward's, 8-0 in six-innings, Monday at Diane Daniels Field as SEU claimed the series by limiting the Hillcats to just one hit.
RSU was limited to just seven baserunners and only three baserunners reached scoring position in the run rule victory for the Hilltoppers.
The Hillcats loaded the bases in the sixth inning, trailing 7-0 at that point, with a
De'Leigh Emarthle single up the middle with two outs.
Arika Araujo and
Taylor Santistevan would walk but a fly out in foul territory would end the inning with the bases loaded.
After the Hilltoppers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Hillcats looked to capitalize on a hit-by-pitch of Santistevan and a walk by
Ali Turner in the top of the second. With two on and one out RSU was unable to make the most of the opportunity as the next two batters struck out.
SEU struck again in the fourth inning as
Edie Fairchild came on to pitch for the Hillcats. A single by Alex Mayfield to center field scored Melina Sanchez to push the Hilltoppers lead to 4-0. Breah Whitten followed with a RBI single to center and a sacrifice fly by Kayla Appleby put SEU up 6-0. The inning came to a close as the Hillcats caught Sami Williams stretching following a RBI double to build the lead to 7-0 through four innings.
The Hilltoppers earned the 8-0 run rule victory in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI single by Williams to center field with two on and one out.
Megan Rosewell suffered the loss in three innings as the starter, allowing three runs on four hits and walking one batter. Fairchild allowed five runs in two and one-third innings of work giving up nine hits and walking two.
Lauren Slatten (4-6) earned the win for the Hilltoppers allowing one hit and issuing four walks while striking out eight Hillcat batters in six innings.
Mayfield, Whitten and Williams combined to account for six of the Hilltoppers 13 hits on the day as each batted 2-for-3. Williams finished with eight RBI while Mayfield and Whitten batted one run each for St. Edward's (9-15, 2-1).
