WICHITA, Kan. – After allowing an early goal, the Rogers State women's soccer team responded with three straight goals, including two in the final 20 minutes, to pull away for a 3-1 win at Newman on Saturday (Oct. 7) afternoon at Maize High School. With the win, the Hillcats moved by the Jets in the conference standings to third as the navy and red improved to 5-3 in league play and 8-3 overall.
 
The Jets went up early with a goal in the fourth minute of the game. Rosa Urista-Chico scored from 35 yards out for the 1-0 score.
 
RSU tied up the score 14 minutes later in the 18th minute on a shot from about 25 yards out on the left wing by Lexi Ellingsen. For the rest of the first half, the score remained even with only eight total shots in the first 45 minutes.
 
In the final 20 minutes, RSU totaled two goals to pull away for the 3-1 victory. Janell Hernandez scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute. A cross from Madison Murray was knocked in by Hernandez for her first goal in the navy and red and for a 2-0 RSU edge.
 
The Cats added an insurance goal seven minutes later in the 78th minute. BreAnn Tolleson's strike beat the NU goalkeeper to the upper right corner for a 3-1 lead.
 
Newman held the edge in shots in the second half at 13-5. For the game, the Jets totaled 18 shots compared to eight from RSU. Shots on goal were more even with NU holding a slight 7-5 advantage.
 
Taylor Sargent started in goal and earned the victory. The junior totaled six saves and allowed the one goal.
