CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State men's soccer team scored a late goal to defeat Ouachita Baptist, 1-0, on Thursday at Soldier Field to move to 3-0 for the first time in the history of the program.
Striker
Jake Simpson scored the game-winning goal as the sophomore tapped in a pass sent in by
Kevin Kwarteng as Simpson was making a run to the near post. The tally came in the 75th minute, snapping a three-game shutout streak for the visiting Tigers.
The Hillcat defense was strong getting their second shutout in three games this season. The Tigers totaled 10 shots, but only two of them were on target. The back line of
Eddie Choe,
Ellis Ashworth,
Jeremy Hoelzer and
Saul Gutierrez limited OBU's opportunities and kept the Tigers scoreless for the first time all season.
RSU created quality opportunities for its offense as 10 shots were on goal. In the second half, the Hillcats put three strikes on goal, before breaking through to score game winner. Six shots on goal came in the second half. Simpson and
Riggie Gonzalez each had three shots on target with
Ramiro Perez adding two shots on goal.
Cody Gammill moved to 3-0 on the season in goal with his second shutout win. He made two saves in 90 minutes.
The Hillcats face a tough road test this Sunday as they travel to No. 23 Lindenwood for a 1 p.m. contest in St. Charles, Mo. at Harlen C. Hunter Stadium.
