ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Rogers State men's soccer team remained unbeaten in 2016 after playing to a 0-0 draw at No. 23 Lindenwood Sunday afternoon at Harlen C. Hunter Stadium.
In the first road test of the season, after winning all three matches in a perfect home stand, the Hillcats battled the nationally-ranked Lions for 110 scoreless minutes and held a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
RSU's best chance for the game winner came in the first overtime period as
Danny Sanchez slipped a pass in behind the Lindenwood defense and onto the foot of forward
Jake Simpson in the 93rd minute. The sophomore bent a shot towards the back post only to see it sail just over the bar as the two teams could not break the deadlock.
Simpson and
Niall Smith paced the offense firing three shots apiece, with each putting one on goal, while
Riggie Gonzalez put the other two shots on goal for the Hillcats.
The RSU defense held firm again recording its third clean sheet of the campaign. The Lions got their only shot on frame of the contest in the 85th minute where goalkeeper
Cody Gammill made his only save of the afternoon and has now posted back-to-back shutouts.
The Hillcats (3-0-1 overall) continue a three-game road trip heading to Lubbock, Texas Sept. 15 for their first Heartland Conference matchup against Lubbock Christian at 3 p.m.
