Women's Soccer Suffers 3-0 Loss at St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Rogers State women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at St. Mary's on Thursday at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

The Hillcats (3-2, 0-2) tested the Rattler (4-0, 2-0) goalkeeper early as Taylor Neubecker put a shot and a header on goal. Jasmine Guerra opened with the first shot of the game, hitting it high as RSU held an early 5-2 advantage in shots.

Although StMU had fewer opportunities early on, the Rattlers tallied the game-winning goal in the 27th minute. Heather Dawson received a through ball and went by the goalkeeper to put the home team up 1-0 midway through the first half.

In the second half, StMU added to its lead with a goal in the 58th minute. Alexa Maldonada curled in a shot from outside the box into the top right corner to make it 2-0 for the home team.

An unfortunate own goal in the 69th minute increased the margin to 3-0 for the Rattlers.

Neubecker, who was making her first start this season, finished with a game-high six shots, including the two early shots on goal. The Hillcats tallied nine shots with three on target in the game.

Tayler Stover went the full 90 minutes in goal, making five saves. The sophomore has totaled five or more saves in four of the five games this season.

StMU came into the game averaging more than seven goals per game with the Hillcat defense holding the Rattlers to a season-low three goals.

The Hillcats look to get back on track on Saturday at Texas A&M International. Start time is set for 12 p.m. in Laredo, Texas at the Dustdevil Soccer Field. Live stats will be available for the contest.
