CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State baseball team started with a three-game sweep of Hillsdale Free Will Baptist as the Hillcats won two games of a doubleheader today at the Diamond Sports Complex. RSU won the two games by the scores of 12-0 and 12-1.
GAME ONE The Hillcats jumped on Hillsdale early, scoring runs in each of the first three innings to pull away in game one. The runs started in the first after an error by the Saints allowed
Jordan Garr to score for a 1-0 edge. Three runs were added in each of the second and third innings for a 7-0 lead. A double by
Garrett Hall plated the first run of the second, and Hall scored after a double to center from
Cameron Kirk. The final run of the second scored on an RBI from
Caleb Kohlmeyer to bring in Kirk. In the third inning runs were scored on a balk by Hillsdale and singles from Kohlmeyer and
Cesar Rodriguez.
Kohlmeyer continued to produce with a RBI double in the fifth inning for an 8-0 advantage. A
Chris Miguel single up the middle upped the lead to 9-0. A walk with the bases loaded made it 10-0, and the final two runs came on a double by Kirk for the 12-0 score. The Hillcats totaled five runs in the fifth to finish the scoring.
Rodriguez and Miguel both went 3-for-4 at the plate. Kohlmeyer was 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBI. Seven Hillcats finished with hits.
Caleb Banks pitched six innings to pick up the win. He totaled three strike outs and allowed only four hits.
Brooks Owen went the final inning and got three straight outs, two on strikeouts.
GAME TWO In the nightcap, RSU put up four runs in both the second and fifth innings to pull away for the 12-1 win in a seven-inning contest.
The four runs in the second scored on a variety of ways.
Ismael Orozco started the scoring with a double to left field to plate
Samuel Davison for a 1-0 edge. After a bunt single by
Danny Donoghue, a throwing error by the Saint pitcher brought in another run. The third run came on a RBI ground out by Garr, and Kohlmeyer upped the advantage to 4-0 with a sac fly.
Two runs were added in the third on a sac fly from Davidson and a single by Garr.
In the fifth inning, the Hillcats added four runs for a 10-0 lead. Back-to-back runs scored on fielder's choices increasing the score to 8-0. Kohlmeyer singled up the middle to bring home Garr for the 9-0 advantage. Rodriguez had an RBI double to left center for the fourth run of the fifth and a 10-0 score.
Hillsdale got their first run of the day in the sixth inning on a RBI ground out for a 10-1 score.
Garr drove in two runs in the sixth inning with a single up the middle to give RSU the 12-1 advantage and shorten the game to seven innings due to the run rule.
Orozco went a perfect 4-for-4 hitting at the plate with one RBI and three runs scored. Garr was 2-for-5 with five RBI.
Josh Eclavea tallied the win, going five inning and allowing only two hits. He finished with one strikeout.
Justin Magstadt and
Rusty Huber each went one inning and combined to allow three hits.
RSU (3-0) returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Mid-America Christian at the Diamond Sports Complex. The twin bill is slated to start at 1 p.m. with audio and live stats available on the Hillcat Network at
