CLAREMORE, Okla. – Senior
Caleb Kohlmeyer picked up his first-career home run in dramatic fashion Saturday with a walk off in game two sealing a doubleheader sweep over Mid-America Christian at the Diamond Sports Complex.
His two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh claimed a short-inning, 12-2 win in game two after the Hillcats squeaked by the Evangels in game one, 8-6.
GAME ONEJordan Garr,
Chris Miguel, and
Garrett Hall each tallied three hits in the opening game as RSU jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and held on for an 8-6 victory behind 13 hits.
Ismael Orozco pushed an RBI groundout plating Miguel to open the scoring in the second inning and Hall added an RBI single for a 2-0 advantage. The margin stretched to six as the Hillcats put up four runs on four hits in the third as Orozco drew a bases-loaded walk and Hall came through again for the navy and red, driving a two-run single into right center.
Miguel beat out an infield single in the fourth scoring Garr as the RSU lead moved to 7-0 before the Evangels broke through on the Cats' starter
Blake Roley in the top of the fifth. MACU struck for three runs with two outs and added three runs in the sixth to make it a one-run game, 7-6.
RSU posted the final run scoring in the bottom of the frame and
Rusty Huber came in and closed out the game, throwing a scoreless seventh for his first save of the season as the Hillcats picked up the 8-6 decision. Roley earned the win allowing three runs on six hits in five innings of work striking out five.
GAME TWOThe Hillcats dominated from the start of game two cutting the day short in a seven-inning win, 12-2. Kohlmeyer went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI to lead the offense.
Zack Ashford got the crowd to its feet lining a two-out pitch over the fence for a three-run home run in the first inning. Kohlmeyer and Miguel reached base via walk before Ashford pulled his first home run of the season down the line in left.
With nobody out in the second, Garr delivered a bases-loaded single as RSU took a 4-0 lead, but could not add to the total. MACU cut the margin in half in the fourth on Jerry McNew's two-RBI single off RSU starter
Tyler Kruse.
RSU took advantage of a two-out error by the Evangels to get the runs back as Miguel ripped a double down the line in left scoring Kohlmeyer and Rodriguez for a 6-2 Hillcats' advantage. In the sixth,
Colton Crocker, Garr, and Kohlmeyer hit consecutive singles as two more runs tacked on to the total making it an 8-2 ballgame.
The Hillcats put the game away by run rule in the seventh with Orozco scoring on a passed ball and pinch runner
Danny Donoghue stealing home before Kohlmeyer's dramatic walk-off home run sealing the 12-2 victory. Kruse picked up the win in his first start at RSU throwing five innings allowing just three hits with six strikeouts.
RSU (5-0 overall) hits the road for the first time in 2016 heading to Tahlequah, Oklahoma for a matchup with regional rival Northeastern State Feb. 9. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
