RSU Women Honor Seniors in Season End

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State women's soccer team got a second-half equalizer from Kimberlin Bennett, but could not hold off Newman in a 3-1 loss on Senior Night at Soldier Field Thursday night.

It marked the final match in the careers of three Hillcat seniors, Taylor Geissler, Taylor James, and Haley Wenlock as the trio donned the RSU navy and red for the last time.

After a turnover in the defensive third, Tayler Stover bailed the Hillcats out in the 42nd minute by coming out and making a diving save on Newman's Morgan Foster. The Jets' leading scorer was not denied in her next opportunity slipping a shot past Stover for a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute.

RSU had a golden opportunity to even the match with 1:02 remaining before halftime as Geissler was taken down inside the penalty area. Korie Martin stepped to the spot and rifled a shot off the right post that ricocheted against NU goalkeeper Kelsi Langley and away as the Hillcats trailed 1-0 at intermission.

The second half opened with RSU pushing the pace of play that led to the equalizing goal in the 58th minute. The Hillcats' leading scorer Bennett sent a header from Taylor Williams' corner kick inside the near post evening the score 1-1. It was the fourth goal of the season for the freshman.

Bennett nearly gave the Hillcats the lead at 61:02 as she got behind the Newman defense, but her attempt at goal was saved by a fully-extended Langley.

The Jets used the defensive momentum to generate the go-ahead goal in the 68th minute as Foster struck for her second of the match and Harriet Jakeman added an insurance marker 10 minutes later icing the match for Newman, 3-1.

Stover suffered the loss in goal for the Hillcats making five saves and finished the season fourth all-time turning away 110 shots in a single season. Langley picked up the win for Newman making five saves in the match.

RSU closed the 2015 season with a 1-16 record going 1-7 in Heartland Conference play.
