LAREDO, Texas – The Rogers State baseball team put itself in position to win its second-consecutive Heartland Conference series but host Texas A&M International had other plans rallying for an 8-4 victory Saturday at Jorge Haynes Field.
The Hillcats held a 4-3 advantage heading into the eighth inning but ace Mason Marquette could not hold off the Dustdevils allowing five runs in the inning.
For the fourth-straight game, RSU scored first as Alex Cochran started the rubber game with a single. Nick Malter brought him home with a single and Ryan Hendricks doubled scoring Caleb Kohlmeyer for a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
TAMIU wasted no time knotting the ballgame with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second despite only hit as Gordie Taggart crossed home plate on a passed ball and Jake Cardoza scored on a sacrifice bunt.
The Hillcats regained a one-run lead 3-2 in the top of the third as Hendricks came through with his second RBI of the game plating Blake Gipson on a single. A sacrifice fly by Johan Ochoa scored J.P. Seifried, who tripled with one out in the sixth putting RSU ahead 4-2.
Marquette kept the Dustdevils in check cruising through the middle innings before running into trouble in the eighth. TAMIU had its first four batters reach base safely before a sacrifice fly tallied the first of five runs in the frame. Edward Layton came in with the bases loaded and allowed a go-ahead, two-run single as the Dustdevils rallied for the series-deciding win, 8-4.
Hendricks and Kohlmeyer finished great weekends at the plate combining to go 5-for-7 Saturday. Marquette suffered his first loss of the season falling to 4-1 while Armando Manrrique got the win in relief for TAMIU throwing a scoreless 2.2 innings allowing just one hit.
Rogers State (10-7, 4-5 HC) heads to Tahlequah, Okla., for a mid-week matchup with Northeastern State Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
