TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Blake Gipson's eighth-inning home run capped a perfect day at the plate breaking a late tie as the Rogers State baseball team clipped Northeastern State 12-11 Tuesday at Rousey Field in non-conference action.
In a game that featured three lead changes and three ties, the Hillcats were able to deliver 14 hits, led by Logan Palmer's 4-for-5 contest, with all four hits going as doubles, while Chase Knott, Caleb Kohlmeyer, and Gipson all tallied multi-hit games. Gipson also walked twice to reach base five times.
RSU scored in all but three innings and opened the game posting one run in the first only to see the RiverHawks even things in the second off starter Collin Thomas. Gipson gave the Hillcats a 2-1 lead with an RBI triple starting a three-run third. NSU cut the deficit down to one 4-3 adding two runs in the bottom of the third.
After RSU scored one in the fifth with Kohlmeyer crossing home plate on a wild pitch, the RiverHawks came back to tie the game 5-5 with a pair of runs on reliever Travis Teague.
Knott gave the Hillcats a spark in the sixth breaking the tie with the first home of the season for RSU blasting a two-run shot to left. The lead did not last long as NSU took its first lead of the game 9-7 in the sixth with a four-run inning.
RSU regained a two-run advantage 11-9 matching the RiverHawks with a four-run outburst in the seventh as the see-saw affair continued. Hunter Spencer entered and recorded a pinch-hit, RBI single and Palmer hit a two-run double off the chalk in left field for the go-ahead run. Austin Culwell drove a single to left bringing home Palmer as the Hillcats went ahead 11-9.
NSU evened the game 11-11 in the bottom half of the frame before Gipson provided the late-game heroics for RSU sending a one-out home run over the fence in left giving the Hillcats a 12-11 edge in the eighth. T.J. Law took the mound for the final two innings shutting down the RiverHawks earning the save while Zach Tyson got the win allowing one hit over 1.1 innings of work.
Justin Burgess got the loss for NSU in his first appearance of the season pitching 1.1 innings allowing only the one hit to Gipson. Burgess was the top performer at the plate for the RiverHawks registering three of the team's 13 hits with four RBIs, including one of two NSU home runs, a three-run blast in the sixth.
Rogers State (11-7 overall) returns to the diamond with a Heartland Conference matchup against McMurry. The three-game series with the War Hawks begins with a doubleheader Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. and can be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
