CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State baseball team could not overcome a three-run first inning by Oklahoma Christian falling 11-1 in Heartland Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Diamond Sports Complex.
The Hillcats committed two errors in the opening frame that proved costly as the Eagles quickly took command of the final game in the three-game set earning the weekend sweep.
RSU starter Jesse Baird put together a great outing scattering five hits and one earned run over seven innings of work but was tagged with the loss dropping to 2-4 on the season.
After a lead-off double by J.P. Seifried in the third, the Hillcats closed the deficit to 3-1 getting back into the game behind Alex Cochran's RBI, bunt single, but were limited to three hits over the final six innings. Cochran and Blake Gipson each finished with two hits for RSU.
The Eagles stretched their lead to 4-1 in the top of the seventh as Markus Carr delivered an RBI double to right center. OC posted a seven-run ninth breaking the game open highlighted by Caden Cleveland's three-run home run as RSU lost its fifth straight.
Luke Sandoval allowed just one run on three hits for OC picking up his first victory of the season while the Eagles' bullpen had four different pitchers hold the Hillcats to two hits in four innings.
Rogers State (12-13, 5-10 HC) returns to action with a mid-week, non-conference contest at Oklahoma Baptist March 25. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
