War Hawks Edge Hillcats in Series Finale, 5-4

CLAREMORE, Okla.-The Rogers State baseball stumbled in the night cap as McMurry (Texas) capitalized on Hillcat miscues for the 5-4 win to take the series at the Diamond Sports Complex Saturday.

The War Hawks took an early one-run lead in the top of the first frame with a Greg Koll RBI single. RSU knotted the score in the third as Hamilton Hernandez scored on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Alex Cochran. RSU took the lead later in the inning as Caleb Kohlmeyer reached on an error that brought Cochran home.

The one-run lead was short-lived as McMurry answered in the top of the fourth with a two-out solo home run knocked over the left field fence to tie the game. With two outs in the sixth, the War Hawks took the lead, scoring a run with the help of a defensive miscue.

RSU battled back in the bottom of the sixth frame to tie the score. Kohlmeyer led off the inning with a triple slapped down the right field line and scored on a RBI single by Blake Gipson. Ryan Hendricks followed with a single with no outs and Johan Ochoa drew a two out walk but RSU left all three base runners stranded to end the inning.

After battling out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth, McMurry capitalized with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead. RSU cut the deficit in the bottom of the eighth with a RBI single by Ochoa but couldn't get the tying run.

Kohlmeyer reached base all four times at-bat going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple while Hendricks was the only other Hillcats with two hits on the day.

Mason Marquette tallied the complete game loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Reliever Mitch Labbie earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits with six strikeouts in four innings pitched.

Rogers State (12-9, 5-7) will hit the road Tuesday as the Hillcats take on Arkansas Tech in Russellville at 7 p.m.
