Dustdevils Overcome Hillcat Comeback Bid

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to Texas A&M International in Heartland Conference play Monday afternoon at Soldier Field.

The Hillcats battled back from a two-goal, halftime deficit sending the contest into overtime. Defender Amanda Jones added a spark to the RSU attack in the 67th minute. The junior won the ball in the midfield and weaved through the defense and was fouled in the box, earning a penalty kick. Sophomore Paige Pontarolo converted from the spot putting the Hillcats on the board. It was the Walla Walla, Washington native's first goal of the season and first in her RSU career.

Blair Thomas evened the score in the 73rd minute with her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Freshman Lexi Ellingsen crossed the ball into the box for Thomas who headed over the charging goalkeeper and into the net.

Thomas registered RSU's best scoring opportunity in extra time, firing the ball back post, forcing the TAMIU goalkeeper Chelsea Knaack to make a diving save.

TAMIU tallied a pair of first-half goals, both coming from junior Kim Garcia, pushing her goal total to seven on the season. The Dustdevils sealed the win in the 95th minute as Ana Jeronmo finished a goal after Garcia hit the crossbar from 20 yards out.

Teri Cocke tallied seven saves while giving up three goals on the day to suffer the loss while Knaack made four saves allowing two goals to earn the win.

Rogers State (0-11, 0-2 HC) returns to action Monday, October 13 as the Hillcats head to Austin, Texas to take on Heartland Conference opponent St. Edwards at 12 p.m.
