Sharpe Paces Hillcats Past War Hawks, 83-73

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Freshman Jeylyn Sharpe scored a career-best 16 points pacing all five Rogers State starters in double figures to an 83-73 victory over McMurry earning a weekend Heartland Conference sweep Saturday at the Claremore Expo.

The Ketchum, Okla., native knocked in 7-of-10 shots from the floor and led the Hillcats with six rebounds, four assists, and three blocks putting together one of the best single-game performances of the season.

RSU started the game allowing the first four points but picked up the tempo and took control with a 16-4 run for an early lead as both teams ran the floor from the opening tip.

McMurry cut into the deficit getting within one 23-22 with less than six minutes remaining in the opening half but RSU closed the frame building a 37-28 lead going into halftime.

The War Hawks held a 22-16 edge inside the paint at the break scoring all but one first-half basket from down low and finished the game scoring 40 points in the paint. RSU did hold McMurry without a made three pointer on the day as the War Hawks were 0-of-8 from behind the arc.

The Hillcats retained their lead throughout the second half despite the War Hawks closing the gap to 41-39. The margin spread to double digits 63-52 with 8:41 to play after Cory Ayala converted on the fast break following a steal by Damion Hooks.

RSU built its largest advantage of the day 83-69 behind a pair of free throws from Sharpe and closed the game 83-73 for its second straight victory improving to 9-2 on its home court.

Robinson Odoch Opong added 15 points for the Hillcats as the team finished the day shooting 58 percent (25-of-43). Hooks netted 14 points while J.C. Hartzler and Ayala added double-digit scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Connor Robinson and Alfred Perez led McMurry with 15 points while Kourtney Goff and Hondo Webb hit double figures adding 11 and 10, respectively, and Alex Lewis grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Rogers State (12-6, 7-3 HC) heads back to the road Thursday as the Hillcats take on Lubbock Christian at 7:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live and on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
