LUBBOCK, Texas – The Rogers State men's basketball team saw its two-game win streak come to an end in a low scoring affair at Lubbock Christian University Thursday from the Rip Griffin Center in Heartland Conference action.
It was the second-lowest scoring game of the season for the Hillcats and early foul trouble hampered them from the early going.
RSU got out to a quick start scoring the first five points after a three pointer by the conference's top outside shooter Robinson Odoch Opong but the Chaps went on a 9-2 run to take an early advantage as the teams traded leads in the opening five minutes.
LCU maintained its slim margin and later extended the lead to double figures holding RSU scoreless for more than four minutes jumping ahead 30-19 with six minutes left in the half. The Chaps controlled until the halftime buzzer increasing the advantage to as much as 17 points before holding a 42-27 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Hillcats cut into the deficit trailing 47-37 after a pair of free throws by Jeylyn Sharpe but LCU hit back-to-back three pointers building its largest lead of the game 55-39.
Deran Banton got a steal and quickly turned up the court throwing down a one-handed slam getting RSU within single digits 61-52 with less than six minutes remaining but the Chaps regained the double-digit advantage and secured the 72-59 conference victory.
Banton led the Hillcats with 11 points off the bench while Odoch Opong tallied 10 points knocking down three from behind the arc.
LCU had three players reach double figures led by a game-high 21 points from Eli Baker and Tyler Rogers. Baker finished the night with a double-double pulling down 13 rebounds.
