SHAWNEE, Okla.- The No. 7-ranked Rogers State softball team dropped the final two contests in the four-game series against No. 20 St. Gregory's on Sunday afternoon at the SGU Softball Complex.
The Hillcats managed just one hit in the openers as they fell 9-0 in a five-inning run-rule. In the nightcap, SGU posted four runs in the first inning and RSU played catch-up the rest of the way, suffering a 10-6 defeat.
GAME ONE
Neither team was able to get much of an offense going in the first three innings of the game. The Hillcats tallied their only hit of the game in the fourth frame as Candace Monigold doubled to shallow left-centerfield. She advanced to third on a ground out but was left stranded.
The Cavaliers came to life in the bottom of the fourth, tallying nine of their 11 hits in the inning. SGU registered nine runs in the inning; seven of the runs came with two outs in the frame. The Cavaliers faced the minimum in the top of the fifth to seal the short-game victory.
Devon Frazier (13-3) tallied the win in the circle for the Cavs, allowing one hit while fanning six hitters.
Laura Fleck was tagged with the loss as she tossed 3.2 innings, allowing nine runs on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The Cavaliers tallied four hits in the first frame and took an early four-run advantage.
RSU cut the deficit in the top of the second. Taran Threet started the inning, reaching base after being hit by a pitch. Katrina Loy followed, drawing a walk to put runners on first and second. Linsey Curtis reached on fielder's choice. Threet advanced to third on the batted ball but reach home on an error by the Cavaliers.
The Hillcats knotted the score in the top of the third. Fleck opened the frame with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a stolen base. Monigold sent her home with a single to left-center field. Loy and Curtis rounded out the scoring as they each registered a RBI single.
SGU regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs and sealed the victory with a four-run sixth.
Fleck (24-8) was tagged with the loss as she tossed the complete game, allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on 13 hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
The Cavaliers staffed the game in the circle with Frazier earnings the win as she tossed the final 3.2 innings, allowing one hit and fanning one.
Rogers State (35-8, 9-7) will return to action on Tuesday at the Diamond Sports Complex as the Hillcats host Bacone College in a twin bill at 5 p.m. The game will be streamed on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live and on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
