PLAINVIEW, Texas – No. 15-ranked Rogers State flew past the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens for a 73-54 victory Thursday evening from the Hutcherson Center.
RSU, after allowing WBU the opening points of the game, quickly took the lead and didn't' surrender it the remainder of the game. The Hillcats puilt the lead to as many as 15 points twice in the opening period and held a 37-25 first half lead.
Six minutes into the second half the Hillcat lead swelled to 49-30 off a layup by Taylor Jeffs. Rician Walker's layup with 1:06 to go put RSU ahead 73-52, the Cats largest lead of 21 points.
The Hillcats scored 12 points off fast break and 17 points off turnover as the Flying Queens' committed 20 mishaps. RSU shot 49 percent from the field knocking in 5-of-11 from behind the arc.
Wayland Baptist (12-9, 4-3) attempted 35 free throws hitting 71 percent. Rochelle Norris registered a double-double for WBU with 13 points and 11 boards. Christie Mooney led all scorers with 16 points for the Flying Queens.
Kelby Fritz finished with 14 points to lead RSU in the scoring column. Sierra Cornwell had 12 points with five steals. Leah Smith totaled 11 points and Walker came off the bench with 10. Senior forward Logan Froese was a forcing defensively in the post redirecting shots to the total of five blocks, a career high for the Claremore, Okla. native.
Rogers State (16-5, 6-1) will close out the West Texas Two Step with a tango Saturday in Lubbock, Texas. The No. 15-ranked Hillcats will face No. 1-ranked Lubbock Christian inside the Rip Griffin Center.
