SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. - The No. 19 Rogers State men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker on Saturday night as Kendrell Thompson buried a three-pointer at the buzzer that was ruled no good, giving No. 25 John Brown the 81-80 victory inside Bill George Arena.
The officials went to replay, but the video was inconclusive, and they ruled the basket was no good. The Hillcats trailed by four points with one minute to play. Thompson drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one point with 41 seconds remaining. Abel Galliguez turned the ball over with 19 seconds to play and Ken Holdman converted a layup with nine seconds to remaining to take a one-point lead. Alex Ewings denied the JBU inbound and the Golden Eagles called a timeout. JBU was able to get the ball inbounded on the second try and weaved the ball through the RSU defense, allowing EJ McWoods to get a layup with three seconds left on the clock. With no time outs remaining, RSU inbounded the ball to Thompson who dribbled down the court and shot the three-pointer from well behind the arc at the buzzer.
JBU led by as many as 10 points in the second stanza, holding the advantage in much of the half. RSU had a one-point advantage to start the second stanza, but the lead was short-lived as the Golden Eagles built an eight-point lead in the first five minutes of the half, leaving RSU to play catch up the rest of the contest.
Donald Williams poured in a game-high 24 points, followed by Thompson with 20 points. Holdman rounded out the double digit scorers with 18 points.
Max Hopfgartner led the Golden Eagles in scoring 15 points. JBU won the battle on the boards 31-24.
Rogers State (13-5, 1-3) will look to return to the win column on Thursday night as the Cats travel to Oklahoma City University at 8 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live and on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
