OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 20 Rogers State topped Oklahoma City University, 79-71, inside Abe Lemons Arena Thursday night.
With just seven players suited to play the Hillcats were fueled by its four senior guards that totaled 76 points.
Coming out of the intermission the Stars led 35-29 and slowly built the lead up to nine with 16:29 remaining. That's when the Hillcat senior guards went to work first with a three-pointer from Kendrell Thompson. Then a strike from behind the arc by Donald Williams and a two-point basket from Alex Ewings trimmed the OCU lead to 45-44.
Williams' bookend threes of a Shawn Grant basket gave RSU a 50-48 lead. Ken Holdman drilled a three-pointer of his own to stretch RSU's lead out to five with just over 12:07 remaining and the Cats wouldn't trail the remainder of the game.
The Hillcat lead never dropped below four points in the final 12:07 of the game and even swelled to 76-66 with 30 seconds to go. RSU was able to break an OCU full-court press for easy layups and pulled out the 79-71 victory.
Holdman, a Tulsa East Central product, totaled 23 points to tie for a game high. Thompson and Williams both added in 21 points each including five three-pointers each. Ewings rounded out the Cats double-digit scoring with 11 points as RSU shot 50 percent from three-point range.
Terry Johnson led the Stars with 23 points, tying Holdman for game high honors. OCU (8-5, 1-4) committed just three turnovers and won the battle of the boards 41-38.
Rogers State (14-5, 2-3) returns home on Saturday to face St. Gregory's inside the Claremore Expo for a 5 p.m. tip time.
