CLAREMORE, Okla. - The No. 25-ranked Rogers State women's basketball team stunned No. 15 Southern Nazarene 71-63 on senior night at the Claremore Expo on Thursday.
The Hillcats hit back-to-back bucket to start the game with a 4-0 lead and refused to relinquish the advantage the rest of the way.
With 14 minutes remaining in the first half, SNU senior Logan Martin cut the RSU lead to one point with a layup. The Hillcats answered with a 10-0 run to take their first double digit lead of the contest. SNU was able to cut the deficit to four points twice in the first stanza, but couldn't gain the lead. Consecutive buckets by Rician Walker gave the Hillcats a 10-point cushion with less than a minute to play in the first period. The Crimson Storm cut the RSU lead to 35-27 at the break as Martin bagged a pair of free throw after being fouled at the buzzer.
RSU took its largest lead of the game with 16 minutes to play as Logan Froese hit a layup off a dish from Leah Smith to give the Cats a 14-point advantage. With less than nine minutes remaining, SNU cut the RSU lead to four points with a pair of free throws by Ashley Mantooth but that was as close as the Storm would get as the Hillcats controlled the game the rest of the way.
The Hillcats won the battle on the boards 40-33. Three Hillcats reached double digit scoring, led by Leah Smith with 14 points. Sierra Cornwell followed with 13 points and four steals while Froese tallied 12 points.
RSU honored three seniors in their final game at the Claremore Expo. Gianna Woods tallied eight points and six rebounds; Brittani Smith added four points and three rebounds while Sasha Barnes registered two points and dished out three assists.
Rogers State (19-10, 12-8) will round out regular season play on Saturday at the University of Science and Arts in Chickasha, Okla. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. and live audio streaming will be provided at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
