CHICKASHA, Okla. – No. 25 Rogers State women's basketball closed out the regular season with a 78-50 victory over USAO Saturday afternoon inside USAO Fieldhouse.
The Hillcat women busted the barn doors open in the second half after leading 36-26 at halftime. Sierra Cornwell scored nine points in the opening four minutes as RSU outscored USAO 12-6 to open the second half.
RSU stretched the lead to 22 points off a Leah Smith 3-pointer with 11:34 remaining. The Hillcat lead ballooned at 73-43 at the 3:30 mark off a Taylor Jeffs layup. The Drovers trimmed the Cat lead to 26 over the final stretch but the Hillcat women prevailed 78-50.
USAO (5-24, 2-20) committed 16 turnovers resulting in 22 Hillcat points. Paige Pulliam and Liberty Payne led the way for the Drovers with 11 points each as three players totaled double digit scoring. USAO was held to 28 percent shooting from the field and was beat on the glass, 54-33.
RSU got off 72 shot attempts while putting an even performance on the glass with 27 offensive and 27 defensive boards. Sierra Cornwell led the way with 21 points as the Preston, Okla. native totaled seven rebounds to go with two steals. Leah Smith finished the afternoon posting 19 in the scoring column. Senior point guard Sasha Barnes recorded a career high nine assists without a turnover.
Rogers State (20-10, 14-8) will return to Claremore to get set for the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament set to begin Thursday, March 1. The Hillcat Network will carry live audio of the game at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
