CLAREMORE, Okla. - For the second straight game, freshman Tara Garrett earned the game-winning goal for the Rogers State women's soccer team as the Hillcats registered a 1-0 win over Wayland Baptist on Thursday evening at Soldier Field.
The win was the third straight shutout victory for the Hillcats. Defending Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Chelsea McMullin posted her fourth shutout of the year as she made seven saves.
Garrett's goal came in the 14th minute of play. Veronica Subu passed the ball down the line to Jordan Beasley who slotted the ball across the face of the goal to Garrett who fired the ball past the keeper.
Seconds later, WBU forward Jordan James fired a shot near post that was saved by McMullin.
McMullin kept the Pioneers scoreless with a diving save at the 10:35 mark off a shot by Jordan James.
The Hillcats clung to their 1-0 lead throughout the game. Both teams had opportunities to score in the second half. RSU outshot the Pioneers 12-9. WBU goalkeeper Courtney Chambers made seven saves while allowing just one goal.
Rogers State (5-3, 1-0) returns to action on Saturday as they host Lubbock Christian at 1 p.m. at Soldier Field. The game will be broadcast live on www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
