Cats Claim Season Opener, 3-1

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State women's soccer team kicked off the season with a 3-1 victory over Oklahoma Wesleyan in its home opener on Tuesday night at Soldier Field.

Freshman Jordan Beasley put the Hillcats on the scoreboard first with her first collegiate goal in the 31st minute of play. Junior Lauren Hager beat the defense down the line, dribbled into the box and slotted the ball to Beasley at the penalty kick spot. Beasley buried the ball in the net to give the Cats the lead.

RSU took the 1-0 advantage into the locker room at the break. The Hillcat defense kept the Eagles from converting a shot in the opening 45 minutes.

In the 69th minute sophomore Devon Bullard gave the Hillcats a 2-0 lead. Junior Veronica Subu served a corner kick to the back post where Bullard volleyed the ball into the net. The goal was the Sand Springs, Okla. native's first collegiate goal.

Bullard delivered her second goal of the night in the 85th minute off a free kick from 35 yards out.

The Eagles avoided the shutout with a goal in the 86th minute. There was a scramble in the box and RSU goalkeeper Chelsea McMullin deflected a shot but the ball landed at Amber Brown-Longoria's feet in front of the goal and she buried it in the corner of the net.

Rogers State (1-0) returns to action on Thursday, September 1 as they travel to Missouri Valley College. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
