CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State women's basketball claimed a 76-67 victory over Lyon College Friday night at the Claremore Expo in the final game prior to opening conference play.
The Hillcats opened the contest on a 12-4 run capped off by Gianna Woods knocking in a jump shot from the top of the key. The Compton, Calif. native finished the game with 13 points and 15 rebounds for the second double-double in her career.
RSU built the lead to double digits for the first time with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half as Leah Smith's runner off the backboard dropped in for a 19-8 Hillcat lead. The Cats built the lead up to 46-26 at the half. Smith ended the game with a RSU team high of 16 points.
The second half opened similar to the first stanza with the Hillcats pressure defense creating points as the Cats lead never dropped below 15 points in the first 10 minutes of the period. Then the Scots gave RSU a dose of their own medicine and put the full-court press upon the Cats. Lyon went on a 12-0 run in just 2:25 to cut the RSU lead to 61-55 with points off turnovers.
RSU held onto a nine point lead over the final 2:11 to claim a 76-67 victory over the Scots.
The Hillcats forced the Scots into 22 turnovers as RSU nabbed 12 steals. RSU shot 76 percent from the free throw line as five Cats registered double-digit scoring. Sasha Barnes tallied 12 points, Ariani Silva finished with 11 while Logan Froese posted 10 points.
Lauren Ramsey led LC in scoring with 20 points while Phagen Altom finished with 16 points. Lyon College (3-2) shot 50 percent from the field and 78 percent from the charity stripe.
Rogers State (4-2) will open Sooner Athletic Conference play on the road Tuesday as they travel to John Brown, tip time is set for 6 p.m. Live audio streaming will be provided at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
