Lady Evangels Rally for Split against Hillcats

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Mid-America Christian managed a split against Rogers State Tuesday despite scoring in just one inning all afternoon at Jack Allen Field in Oklahoma City.

The Lady Evangels rallied from a 4-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to steal the nightcap, 5-4. The Hillcats dominated MACU in the opener, scoring in each of the last four innings en route to a 4-0 win.

GAME ONE

RSU handled the Evangels with ease in the first game of the day. The Cats broke loose from a scoreless tie in the fourth and cruised to the win behind a solid pitching effort by Taryn Hernandez.

Hernandez tossed six shutout innings with three strikeouts and no walks to record the victory. She helped her own cause when she singled and scored the first run of the game in the fourth. Jordan Ford followed suit with a leadoff single in the fifth and eventually scored on an error.

Linsey Curtis singled to left-field to start the sixth and raced home on a squeeze bunt by Katie Bointy. Ashlie Fauchier singled and scored the final run of the game in the seventh. The Cats outhit the Evangels, 10-5, and did not commit an error in the contest. Jill Banks (6-8) suffered the loss for MACU in a complete-game performance.

GAME TWO

The Hillcats were in position to complete the sweep before a mammoth sixth-inning swung the decision in favor of MACU.

The Evangels plated five runs on six hits in their final at-bat. The decisive blow came off the bat of Tori Covarrubias. Covarrubias swatted a three-run homer to left-center to put MACU in front for good. It was her only hit of the afternoon.

RSU built a 4-0 lead by scoring runs in each of the first four innings. The Cats put the leadoff hitter aboard in the first three innings with two hits by Ashlie Fauchier and one by Shelby Brogdon. The Hillcats cashed in for runs each time and added a fourth tally with back-to-back singles by Ford and Logan Zamora in the fourth.

Caitlyn Ulmer (12-3) retired the Hillcats in order in the seventh to cap a complete-game victory. She allowed four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Hernandez (12-3) was tagged with the loss for RSU. Fauchier notched three of the Cats nine hits.

Rogers State (31-15, 12-10) will take the rest of the week off before traveling to Northwestern Oklahoma State Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
