SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Rogers State baseball team earned a series victory over Oklahoma Baptist with a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Bison Field in Shawnee, Okla.
After losing the series opener at home Thursday in 10 innings, the Diamond Cats bounced back with two decisive wins on the road. RSU pounded out 13 hits to take the first game of the day, 9-5. The Cats jumped on the Bison with three runs in the first inning of the nightcap and rolled to a 12-2 run-rule victory.
GAME ONE
The hits came in bunches for the Hillcats in game one. Three straight singles by Brandt Barnes, Zach Hamby and Joe Manbodh put RSU in front 2-0 in the third inning. Tyler Harold continued to swing a hot bat with RBI doubles in the fourth and fifth and a run-scoring single in the seventh. The Oologah, Okla., native upped his batting average to .500 with five hits on the afternoon.
Harold, Rob Rodriguez and Billy Balak each tallied doubles as part of a four-run fifth. OBU tried to stay close by utilizing the long ball. Anthony Ramirez belted a solo homer in the second and Arin Fowble followed with a two-run job in the fifth. Justin Trejo added another solo bomb in the sixth before Jordan Clark closed the door for the Hillcats. OBU plated one run in the bottom of the seventh to reach the final margin, 9-5.
Tyler Garner (5-0) kept his perfect record intact with five-plus innings of work. He allowed four runs on seven hits. Jordan Clark earned his fourth save while Tyler Duran took the loss for the Bison.
GAME TWO
RSU scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings and clinched the series win with a short-game victory in the nightcap.
Hamby gave the Cats an early lead with an RBI double and Balak followed with a two-run homer to left-center. Lance Rymel and Tyler Harold laced back-to-back triples to start the second inning and Luis Caraballo swatted a three-run homer in the third. Rob Rodriguez and chipped in with a two-run single in the fourth and Caraballo capped the scoring with an RBI single up the middle.
Sophomore southpaw Jacob Wenaas (1-0) earned his first victory with five strong innings of work. He allowed two runs on eight hits. A two-run homer by Victor Manzano in the second inning produced the only tallies of the game for OBU. Blake Gallacher was tagged with the loss for the Bison after being chased from the game in the second inning.
Harold and Rodriguez posted three hits apiece while Hamby and Caraballo added two knocks each.
Rogers State (12-2, 5-1) claimed its second consecutive conference series victory. The Hillcats will face No. 14 Wayland Baptist in a three-game series Friday and Saturday in Plainview, Texas.
