Diamond Cats Dominate Dallas Christian

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers baseball team closed out a 4-0 weekend with a pair of run-rule victories over Dallas Christian College Sunday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore.

After winning two critical conference games at Oklahoma Baptist Saturday afternoon, the Hillcats cruised to two easy victories against the Crusaders. The offensive onslaught continued despite the fact that RSU Coach Ron Bradley elected to rest a number of his regular starters.

The Cats scored in every inning of the opener en route to a 12-2 victory. RSU trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning of the nightcap before exploding for a record 12 runs to halt the game at 13-3.

GAME ONE

Zach Hamby laced an RBI double to left field in the bottom of the first inning and the Hillcats were off to the races from there. Luis Caraballo followed with an RBI single and Lance Rymel added an RBI double to make it 3-0 after the first inning.

Kevin Radford plated two runs with a single to right field in the second and Brandt Barnes followed suit with a rip to right in the third. Freshman Keith Poverud smashed his first career home run with a towering shot that wrapped around the left field foul pole in the fifth.

Caraballo delivered the knockout punch with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. The senior shortstop went 3 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored. Hamby added two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

Senior DJ Thompson (1-0) picked up his first pitching victory of the season with four innings of work. He allowed two runs on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Cristian Baez tossed a scoreless fifth inning to finish the job.

GAME TWO

The Hillcats were unable to solve Dallas Christian starter Grant Henry for four innings. RSU appeared to be in trouble until the floodgates opened in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Henry allowed just one run on one hit over the first four frames. Colton West doubled and scored on an RBI groundout by Poverud in the second, but the Cats trailed, 3-1, entering the fifth.

A pinch-hit triple by Caraballo tied the score and chased Henry from the game. The Crusaders called upon three different relievers in the inning, but were unable to come up with three outs. Brandt Barnes greeted Hunter Wood with a single and West followed with an RBI knock to right. Joe Manbodh plated two more runs with a single before Wood was given the quick hook.

Dallas Christian handed the ball to Justin Browning, who walked the first hitter he faced and gave up hits to the next three. Jairo Valdez cranked a two-run single, as did Chris Brown. Barnes tripled home Brown and scored the final run on a sacrifice fly by Hamby. Barnes, West and Valdez tallied two hits apiece for the Hillcats.

Freshman Frensly Martina (1-0) earned his first victory with one inning of scoreless relief. Freshman Casey Cassity received a no decision after giving up three runs, one earned, over the first four innings. Henry was tagged with the loss for DC.

Rogers State (14-2) ran its winning streak to four games and will enjoy a four-day break before heading to Plainview, Texas. The Hillcats will play Wayland Baptist in a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.
