CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State bounced back from a brutal loss with its biggest win of the season as the Hillcats salvaged a split with third-ranked Lubbock Christian Friday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore.
After being pounded, 13-0 in the opener, the Cats got up off the mat and responded with an inspired effort to post a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. Sarah Harvey cranked two of RSU's four home runs while Tye Coats allowed just two hits in a dominating performance.
GAME ONE
Things got off to a rocky start and quickly rolled down hill for the Cats in game one. RSU committed three errors in the first two innings, leading to a 3-0 head start for the Lady Chaps. Priscilla FaGaines belted a two-run homer in the third and Kim Frazier swatted a grand slam as part of a five-run fourth.
Frazier leads the NAIA with 25 home runs and is on pace to break the national single-season record. LCU tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth to reach the final margin.
RSU managed just three hits in the contest. Alyessa Gutierrez (18-2) earned the win by allowing just two hits over the first four frames. Coats took the loss after giving up 10 runs, seven earned, on 13 hits. FaGaines and Clarissa Maldonado had two hits apiece for the Chaparrals.
The13-run loss was the largest margin of defeat ever for the RSU softball program.
GAME TWO
The Hillcats came out swinging in the nightcap. After a leadoff single by Ashlie Fauchier in the bottom of the first inning, Harvey ripped a two-run homer to left field. Linsey Curtis followed with a solo homer to make it 3-0 in favor of the home team.
Curtis ranks second in the NAIA with 16 homers this season and trails only Frazier on the NAIA home run leader board.
Taryn Hernandez pushed a run across with a sacrifice fly in the second and Harvey went deep for the second time to lead off the third. Katie Bointy sent her fourth homer of the spring sailing over the boards in left field in the fourth and Brittany White singled home Jordan Ford in the sixth to reach the final margin.
After getting knocked around in the opener, Coats (15-5) turned in her best pitching performance of the year in game two. She didn't allow a single base-runner until the fifth inning when FaGaines homered to centerfield. A seventh inning double by Frazier was the only other blemish of the game for the junior right-hander.
Jori Rodgers (12-1) was tagged with her first loss for LCU. She yielded four runs on six hits over the first 1.2 innings. Gutierrez gave up two runs in 2.1 innings of relief and Brandi Luck allowed the final run while pitching the fifth and sixth innings.
Harvey finished with two homers and three RBI while Fauchier and Shelby Brogdon chipped in with two hits apiece.
Rogers State (22-6, 8-2) knocked off a Top 5 opponent for just the second time in school history as Lubbock Christian (31-3, 12-2) saw its eight-game winning streak snapped. The Hillcats will enjoy a weekend off before traveling to Bethany, Okla., Monday to face Southern Nazarene.
