No. 7 Stars Squeak Past No. 25 Hillcat Women, 68-62

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - It was a game of two halves for the No.25 Rogers State women Saturday afternoon at Abe Lemons Arena in Oklahoma City as the No.7 Stars were able to pull out the victory 68-62.

The Hillcats gained a 12-4 lead midway through the first half off strong swarming defense and six points by Jenny Hardin. Hardin finished the half with eight points as RSU held the lead for all but the final 25-seconds of the period. The Stars entered the halftime locker room with a 27-26 advantage.

RSU outrebound the Stars in the first half, 24-15, with 14 of the Hillcat boards coming on the defensive end. The Stars were able to convert the Hillcats 13 first half turnovers into 16 points. Guards Chontaye Walter and Donica Cosby kept OCU in the first half with 20 of the Stars 27 points.

The second half was a different story for Coach Amy Williams' squad as they suffered through a seven minute scoreless stretch to open the half as the Stars built a ten point lead. OCU center Starr Fairbanks opened the first nine minutes of the second period with eight points to help fuel the Stars' lead.

Yoda Woods produced a career performance in the second half, scoring 14 of her career-high 18 points for the Hillcats. Woods second half scoring and rebounding helped the Cats spark a 13-3 run of their own to tie the game at 47 with just over seven minutes remaining. However, Woods missed a layup with 1:42 left in the game and the Stars quickly turned a three point lead into seven.

RSU was able to cut into the lead following a 3-pointer by Autumn Thompson and basket by Hardin. An untimely turnover in the final 16 seconds was the dagger for the Hillcats.

RSU shot eight percent from 3-point range while OCU countered at 25-percent. The Cats outrebounded the Stars, 43-36. But 26 turnovers by the Hillcats were converted into 27 points by OCU.

Rogers State (16-7, 8-7) will travel to Shawnee to face No.4 Oklahoma Baptist Thursday evening in search of its first victory over the Lady Bison. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
