CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team picked up a pair of victories in its 2010 home debut Saturday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore.
Â
The Hillcats started the day with a 5-3 win over Grand View University (Des Moines, Iowa) and topped it off with a 10-1 run-rule victory against Evangel University (Springfield, Mo.). RSU banged out 18 hits in the twin bill, including back-to-back home runs by Tye Coates and Linsey Curtis.
GAME ONE (vs. Grand View)
Â
A two-run fifth inning keyed the Cats 5-3 victory over Grand View. Sarah Harvey laid down a perfect bunt to score Brittany White from third base with the go ahead run and Tye Coats tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single to left field.
Â
Coats made sure the lead stood up with a complete-game performance in the pitcher's circle. The Texas Tech transfer scattered eight hits across seven innings of work and fanned eight batters without a walk.
Â
The Vikings' only runs came in the aftermath of a bad break for the Hillcats. With two runners on and two outs, Coats struck out Emily Gilbert swinging to end a third-inning threat. However, the pitch bounced off the plate and over the head of catcher Dina Oritz, allowing Gilbert to reach first on the wild pitch. Courtney Yacinich followed with a two run double to give Grand View a 3-2 lead.
Â
RSU tied the score on an RBI double by Harvey in the bottom of the third and took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth. Harvey went 2 for 2 with three RBI in the victory while Coats and Ashlie Fauchier added two hits apiece. Kylee Jones was tagged with the loss for the Vikings while Coats earned her third win of the spring.
GAME TWO (vs. Evangel)
Â
The Hillcats exploded for 10 runs on 11 hits to record a short-game win against Evangel in the nightcap.
Â
RSU batted around with six hits in the bottom of the third inning. Curtis laced a two-run homer down the left field line and Coats belted a bomb over the boards in right-center on the very next pitch.
Lady Crusaders' pitcher Kaitlyn Hasty was chased from the game in the fourth as the Hillcats piled on with four more runs. Harvey ripped a two-run double to center and Curtis followed with a double to right. Harvey and Curtis combined to go 4 for 6 with six RBI in the contest.
Coats (4-3) allowed just one unearned run in the victory. She struck out five with no walks and yielded one hit. Hasty took the loss for Evangel.
Rogers State (6-3) will close out the weekend with a doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Grand View. First pitch is scheduled for noon at the Hillcat Complex.
