CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State baseball team is off to its best start in school history after posting a doubleheader sweep over Benedictine College Saturday at the Hillcat Complex.
Â
The Diamond Cats jumped out to a three-run lead in the opener and cruised to a 6-1 win behind a strong pitching performance by Grant Cosby. The nightcap quickly turned into a runaway as RSU plated 11 runs on 13 hits en route to an 11-3 decision. Coach Ron Bradley's club improved to 4-0 with the sweep. Sunday's scheduled doubleheader against Benedictine was called off due to the impending winter weather expected to blanket Oklahoma on Valentine's Day.
GAME ONE
Â
RSU made the most of its six hits in the first game of the day as the Cats posted a 6-1 victory.
Â
Ravens' starter Bryan Poland walked the first three batters of the first inning and the Hillcats cashed in with three runs. Rob Rodriguez lined a sacrifice fly to centerfield to put RSU on the board and Billy Balak followed with a single to right. Pau Sancho drew a bases loaded walk to make it 3-0.
Â
The early run support proved to be more than enough cushion for Cosby. The senior right-hander was sharp through five innings of work, allowing just one run on three hits. Benedictine managed to push a run across in the top of the fourth, but Rodriguez answered with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame. RSU added single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings to reach the final margin.
Â
Cosby (2-0) picked up his second win in as many outings this spring. Southpaw Drew Taylor closed out the contest with two innings of scoreless relief.
GAME TWO
Â
The RSU bats came alive in the nightcap as the Cats tagged five Ravens' pitchers for 13 hits in an 11-3 rout.
Â
Tyler Harold sparked the offense with a double to leftfield to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Harold promptly stole third base and trotted home on a single by Zach Hamby. Freshman Steven Smith added to the lead with a towering two-run homer off the left field scoreboard in the fourth. Harold followed with a single and scored on a double by Colton West.
Â
The Hillcats put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. RSU took advantage of four free passes issued by the Benedictine bullpen as Lance Rymel belted a two-run single to deep right field.
Â
Starter Tyler Garner (2-0) was nearly untouchable over five innings of work for RSU. He fanned three and allowed only one hit to record his second victory. Relievers Josh Phillippi and D.J. Thompson tossed scoreless frames. The Ravens reached Frensly Martina for one run in the eighth and Jordan Clark for two more in the ninth.
Â
Rogers State (4-0) will have a week off before hosting Baker University in a four-game series next weekend at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
