CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State baseball team nipped Baker University in a pair of one-run games Saturday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex to improve to 6-0 on the season.
Â
The Hillcats staged a two-run rally in their final at-bat to take the series opener, 2-1. RSU scored two runs in the first inning of the nightcap and the Hillcat hurlers made the lead stand up for another 2-1 victory.
GAME ONE
Â
RSU was forced to come from behind for the first time this season to keep its winning streak alive against Baker. The Hillcats benefited from two walks and two errors by Baker in the final frame.
Â
Rob Rodriguez drew a walk to start the rally and went to second when the Wildcats' third baseman mishandled Billy Balak's sacrifice bunt. KD Radford worked a walk in his first at-bat of the season to load the bases with nobody out. Luis Caraballo hit a dribbler to first baseman Jared Herbert and Rodriguez scored the tying run when Herbert's throw to the plate sailed high. Lance Rymel followed with the decisive blow, a sacrifice fly to deep center that brought home pinch-runner Jairo Valdez with the winning run.
Â
Lefty Drew Taylor (1-0) earned his first win in three innings of relief. He allowed one unearned run and struck out two. Starter Grant Cosby tossed four scoreless innings in his third quality start of the spring.
Â
Baker starter Chris Cummins deserved a better fate. He shut the Cats down over six innings of work, tallying six strikeouts and just two walks. However, closer Cody Lefebvre couldn't close the door and was charged with the loss. RSU improved to 5-0 despite getting out-hit 4-3 in the contest.
GAME TWO
Â
Rob Rodriguez swatted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and it proved to be the difference as the Hillcats picked up their second 2-1 victory of the afternoon.
Â
Zach Hamby stroked a two-out double to left in the first and Rodriguez followed with an opposite field jack. Baker plated a run in the top of the second on a sac fly by Bryan Kindle. Both teams were held off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Â
Tyler Garner (3-0) was effective in four innings of work for RSU. The sophomore right-hander allowed one run on three hits. Junior Jordan Clark earned a three-inning save by shutting the Wildcats down over the final three frames. Starter Dustin Moomau was tagged with the loss for Baker. His only blemish was Rodriguez's bomb in the first inning.
Â
Joe Manbodh tallied two of the Cat's six hits in the contest.
Â
Rogers State (6-0) improved on its best start in school history with the doubleheader sweep. The Hillcats and Wildcats will play another doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. weather permitting.
