Diamond Cats Split with Eagles to Close Season

EDMOND, Okla. - Rogers State and Oklahoma Christian split a doubleheader amidst rain soaked conditions at Dobson Field Friday night in Edmond, Okla.

Saturday's series finale was washed out, effectively bringing the 2009 season to an end for both the Hillcats and the Eagles. The Sooner Athletic Conference baseball tournament has been trimmed to a six-team event this spring, which left RSU on the outside looking in after a seventh place finish in the regular season standings.

The Diamond Cats won the opener Friday behind a great pitching performance by senior Randy Jones. Jones allowed only one unearned run over seven innings to lift RSU to a 4-1 victory. However, defensive woes and bullpen struggles plagued the Hillcats in the nightcap as they gave away two late leads and fell 9-7 in the final game of the year.

GAME ONE

RSU took an early lead and Jones did the rest as the Hillcats took care of business in the opener.

Blake Kelley scored Brandon Denton with a single through the left side in the top of the first inning to give the Cats the early lead. Kelley made it 2-0 when he singled to lead off the fourth, stole second base and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Littlejohn.

The Eagles lone run came on a two-out error by Kelley in the bottom of the fifth. However, the Hillcat shortstop more than atoned for the miscue. He ripped a one-out double in the fifth and scored on a single up the middle by Joe Manbodh to finish the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Rob Rodriguez plated Manbodh with a single to right to reach the final margin, 4-1.

Jones (3-4) picked up his third and final win of the season with a complete-game outing. He scattered five hits across seven innings and tallied four strikeouts. Tyler Sutton took the loss for OC in a complete-game effort as well.

GAME TWO

The Hillcats were unable to hold on to a pair of late leads in the nightcap and ended up on the wrong side of a 9-7 decision.

The Cats carried a one-run lead into the seventh inning, but the bullpen couldn't close the door. Zac Coshow greeted reliever Josh Phillippi with a home run to right field to start the seventh frame, tying the game at 7-7. Phillippi walked the next batter and surrendered the lead when Justin Ebert ripped an RBI double to left field. A run-scoring wild pitch by Cristian Baez gave the Eagles a two-run cushion entering the bottom of the seventh and OC closer Ryan Kirk completed the victory by pitching around a Denton single in the bottom of the inning (RSU was the home team in Game 2).

RSU fell behind early as OC reached starter Grant Cosby for three runs in the top of the second inning. Rodriguez brought the Cats back with one swing of the bat. The junior first baseman belted a grand slam home run that banged off the scoreboard in left-center some 450 feet from home plate to give RSU a 4-3 lead.

The Eagles regained the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs after Travis Harold misplayed a fly ball in left. However, the Hillcats answered back in their half of the fifth by loading the bases and then emptying them on a single to left by Kelley. OC plated another unearned run in the top of the sixth when Cosby booted a soft grounder back to the mound that would have ended the inning. The one-run RSU lead didn't hold up in the final frame.

Phillippi (3-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs and recording just one out in the seventh. Riley Jones picked up the win in relief for the Eagles. Kelley and Rodriguez combined for all seven of the Hillcats RBI in the contest.

Rogers State (29-21, 13-16) completed its third consecutive winning season with the Friday split. Seniors Brandon Denton, Chris Graves, Mitch Guemmer, Zach Hamby, Travis Harold, Randy Jones, Ryan Littlejohn and Coby Wright will depart from the Hillcat baseball program this spring.
