St. Gregory's Slips Past Softball Hillcats

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State saw victory snatched from its grasp twice Tuesday afternoon as fourth-ranked St. Gregory's rallied for a doubleheader sweep at the Hillcat Complex.

Jenny Johnson and All-American Sharon Bell went toe-to-toe in a 1-0 pitcher's duel in the opener. The only run of the game came via an errant throw by Johnson in the top of the seventh inning. The Hillcats led 2-1 entering the seventh inning of the nightcap, but were once again undone by an untimely error. Centerfielder Lillian Nevarez couldn't hold on to a sinking line drive that would have ended the game and the Lady Cavs took advantage by scoring four runs with two outs in their last at-bat to complete the sweep.

GAME ONE

Johnson and Bell dominated the storyline in a 1-0 SGU victory in the first game of the day.

The two frontline hurlers traded zeroes until Johnson's miscue in the top of the seventh. Wendy Acosta started the inning with a single and pinch runner Hay Lea Harper went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Johnson fielded a bunt attempt by Mel Dwight, but her throw sailed wide of first base, allowing Harper to score from second for the only run of the game.

It was the lone blemish in a brilliant performance by the senior right-hander. She allowed one unearned run and four hits while striking out six. Bell posted a complete-game shutout with 13 strikeouts and just one hit. Ironically, it was Johnson who broke up Bell's bid for a no-hitter with a hard single to left in the fourth.

GAME TWO

The outcome was eerily similar for the Hillcats in the nightcap as the Lady Cavs capitalized on a seventh inning error to rally for a 5-2 victory.

Dailyn Dauman's two-out liner to centerfield managed to pop out of the glove of Nevarez, allowing the tying run to score from second base. The miscue breathed new life into the SGU lineup as the Cavs ripped three consecutive hits to grab a three-run lead. Bell (17-4) came on in relief of starter Sarah Bradley to record the final nine outs and pick up the win.

Nevarez was the player who put the Hillcats in position for the win with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. Natalie Smith started the inning with a single and Nevarez delivered the only runs of the game for RSU with a shot over the fence in left. She tallied two of the Cats three hits in the contest.

Johnson (19-13) was tagged with the loss. She surrendered five runs, one earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts. Kyra Hart tallied three of the Lady Cavs nine hits in the contest.

Rogers State (21-15, 4-10) returns the diamond Thursday afternoon for another Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. and the games will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
