Diamond Cats Fall to No. 11 Bellevue, 10-7

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Fresh off its win over the top ranked team in the country, Rogers State was unable to repeat the feat as the Hillcats fell 10-7 to No. 11 Bellevue University (Bellevue, Neb.) Tuesday at the Hillcat Complex.

The Bruins cranked out 17 hits against a trio of Hillcat hurlers and scored at least one run in seven of their nine at-bats. RSU took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double by Ryan Littlejohn. However, Claremore product Jerrod White regained the lead for Bellevue in top of the third with a three-run homer to left-center field.

The Hillcats fought to stay close, but were unable to regain the lead. Rob Rodriguez belted a pair of solo homers in the fourth and sixth innings, but each time the Bruins had an answer. Jake Jadlowski and Louie Templeton laced RBI singles in the fifth and Matt Johnson doubled and scored on a pass ball in the seventh.

Littlejohn swatted a solo homer in the eighth to bring the Cats back to within two. Reliever Justin Long came on in relief of starter Luis Castillo following the homer and escaped a bases loaded jam with a groundout. Long worked a scoreless ninth to record a five-out save.

Castillo (7-2) earned the win with 7.1 innings of work. He allowed seven runs on eight hits with 10 strikeouts. Josh Walker (5-2) took the loss for RSU after giving up eight runs on 11 hits over five innings.

Johnson led Bellevue with four hits while White went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Littlejohn, Rodriguzs and Denton tallied two hits apiece for the Hillcats.

Rogers State (28-20) completed the non-conference portion of its 2009 schedule and will play its final home date of the season Thursday against Oklahoma Christian. It will be Senior Night at the Hillcat Complex as the Cats host the Eagles in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
