Softball Cats Split Games at Springfield Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Rogers State split a pair of one-run ball games Saturday at the University of Illinois-Springfield tournament. Sunday's portion of the event was washed out due to rain.

The Hillcats lost the early game Saturday, 4-3 to William Woods (Fulton, Mo.) on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth inning. RSU rebounded for a 2-1 victory over the University of Saint Francis (Joliet, Ill.) in the second contest of the day.

GAME ONE (vs. William Woods)

William Woods scored two late runs to force extra innings and plated the game winner in the bottom of the ninth to net a 4-3 win.

Chelsea Loethen ripped a one-out single to left field to score the winning run via the international tie-breaker rule in the ninth.

The Hillcats held a 2-0 lead after Tanya Koch led off the third inning with a solo home run and Natalie Smith picked up an RBI groundout in the fifth. A two-run homer by Kelsey Schulte tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and forced extra frames.

The two teams exchanged runs in the eighth inning, but the Hillcats were unable to convert in the top of the ninth, setting the stage for Loethen's walk-off.

Jenny Johnson took the loss for RSU after giving up four runs, one earned, in 8.1 innings of work. Schulte earned a complete-game victory for William Woods.

GAME TWO (vs. Saint Francis)

Johnson took care of business all by herself to knock off the University of Saint Francis and salvage a split Saturday afternoon. The senior pitcher belted a two-run homer in the first inning and tossed a complete-game gem to earn a 2-1 victory.

Megan Wood led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and scored on Johnson's 13th home run of the season. The Hillcats would not register another hit in the contest, but Johnson had all the run support she would need.

Saint Francis tallied three singles in the top of the sixth inning to draw to within one run. Johnson promptly ended the threat with a groundout and retired the side in order in the seventh to complete the win. Johnson (25-17) scattered five hits across seven innings and picked up five strikeouts without yielding a walk. Kim Malacina suffered the loss for USF.

Rogers State (27-19) will travel Edmond, Okla., Tuesday for a conference doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
